Come and See 3

Come and See

Maybe you’ve stumbled across this page on the internet or have only been to church for a wedding or funeral.

Or maybe you have a colleague or neighbour who goes to church, and you’ve wondered what it’s all about.

Here is what you will usually find.

Christians usually gather on Sunday, because we believe that Jesus rose from the dead on that day. Some churches meet in special buildings, others in schools or community halls. When you arrive, someone will greet you. Sit where you like and wear what you like.

Look around and you will see people like you. A church is its people, not the place.

Young parents juggling toddlers. Older people marked by life’s joys and sorrows. Children and teenagers full of energy. People from different cultures and backgrounds. People with mental and physical disabilities. Some glad. Some sad. Some feeling bad. None perfect.

Then the service begins. We call it ‘worship’ because it is directed to God. We want to give him a big shout out because of who he is and what he has done for us in Jesus.

There’s music and  singing – often with guitars, keyboards or drums. Someone welcomes everyone and prays in everyday language. We sing songs that praise God and express what Christians believe. We share news, pray for others, and teach the children.

The longest part is a Bible talk. Someone explains a passage of the Bible and shows how it connects to real life — work, family, pressure, doubt, hope. We want it to make sense and to matter.

At the end, there’s encouragement to live for God in the week ahead — and an invitation to stay for tea, coffee and a chat.

Please stay.

The coffee may not be café grade, but the chats matter. There are technical glitches and musical mishaps. More importantly, there are flawed people — just like everywhere else. Church is not perfect.

That’s the point.

We gather because none of us has life sorted by ourselves. We believe that life only makes sense when we are connected to God, our maker, through his Son, Jesus Christ. In Jesus there is forgiveness of sin, hope in life and death and a way to live that works.

So come and see. Meet some ordinary people. More importantly, meet Jesus.
